Stan's video came at a very good time for me. I am doing some ground
training with my two fillies that are about the same age as Thokki.
It's good to see how Thokki responds to this trainer, what strategies
work for Thokki and which ones don't. Looking forward to seeing more,
Stan! Annie
Where do you go to get a zedonk? Annie
I rode racehorses at Glade Valley Farm back in the 70's as a way to
put myself through college and support my Icelandic horse habit, (now
there's irony for you) and I never thought anything about it. I
actually thought I was doing a good thing, riding those horses and
showing them kindness. Now I
You live in a very beautiful place surrounded by beautiful horses and
you have a real gift for capturing all that on film. And it's
probably not hot there! Annie
I remember seeing Stormur and thinking he was the tallest Icelandic I
had ever seen. Very good looking boy. Do you remember me? You and I
were talking with Sarah Elkins inside the barn and then later when
Stormur was outside grazing. Annie Shields
To the person who said it is wrong to separate 2-week old foals from
their mothers is ill-informed, as foals cannot be evaluated until they
are 4 weeks old. From what I observed, when foals began to panic
because of the separation, they were quickly reunited with Mom.
That's not to say I approve o
Karen, I agree with a lot of what you are saying. I went to the
evalulations here in Georgia last Friday, the day when they were
evaluating the youngsters. I had two yearlings that I considered
taking with me but changed my mind when I realized how much it would
cost to fill up my truck with gas
Can't wait to see what he looks like when he's had some TLC. Annie
Icelandic is very hard to learn. Once you have learned it, the only
place you can use it is in iceland. I have known people who studied
Icelandic for years but were still unable to converse adequately in
Iceland. I would like to learn it also, just enough so that I could
pronounce words correctly
Last year Gloa had a foal and I want to tell you the story of Kyppa's
birth, not to support either side of the "To Watch or Not Watch"
debate, but to just let you know how my vigilance affected Gloa's
behavior.
When it came close to her time, I started waking up in the middle of
the night and chec
Very nice slide show, Karen. Thanks for sharing. Looks like you have
a fine healthy baby. Annie

Silver dapple, silver hair, golden years. Your relationship with this

A tough week, indeed! Your family is in my prayers. My 98-year old
mother was recently diagnoxed with congestive heart failure, but not
the chronic kind and she was able to overcome it and is doing well
now. I hope your brother has similar luck. Annie
I learned to drive before I ever rode...a team of black draft horses,
Percherons maybe, named Bob and Queen, a mother and son. This was on
Mackinac Island, Michigan where there are no cars unless you count the
ambulance and fire truck. Bob and Queen pulled a dray and carried
suitcases from the do

I remember shetlands when I was a kid. They weren't much smaller than
Icelandics. I started raising Icelandics about the time the bottom
fell out of the shetland pony market, about the time most Americans
were realizing that it was a rare small child who could ride such a

As a one-time race horse exercise jockey, I am amazed that someone who
had never ridden any horse, let alone a race horse, could become
proficient enough to be a jockey at her age! I admire her too. Annie

I am interested to know what Njorthur has on his head and how it
works. She has a whip in her left hand. How is she using that?

How can you avoid yelling when you are in a big arena and you need to
be heard? I did therapeutic ridng for 10 years in a Methodist
children's home. Most of the children had been abused at one time or
other but most could distinguish between angry yelling and the kind of
yelling that is neccessar
Beautiful picture of your horses and little girl. That's how I
remember West Virginia: boot-sucking mud and wind that never quits.

When I first had my Icelandics in West Virginia ('60's), "pony
pulling" was all the rage. These contests would be held at county
fairs and other places and it became a betting event. A sturdy pony
that looked as if he could pull would bring a good bit of money.
Several times I had phone c
Did you ever read "A Child's Christmas in Wales" by Dylan Thomas? One
of the best Christmas Stories ever. You'll like it. Annie
Hey, small world. I lived in Keyser, Mineral Co. W.V. for about 10
years. I had my Icelandics there on Knobley Mountain and worked for
the C&P Phone company as a lineman. I didn't do a lot of log-pulling
with my Icelandics. When I first came to own them I was living in
Morgan Co. W.V. (Berkeley
Years ago I sometimes used Icelandics to pull logs. In West Virginia, horses
can go in the mountains where tractors and other equipment cannot go. The
phone company has used horses and mules to pull cable from pole to pole in the
steepest parts of West Virginia for years. I remember seeing ho
And what about that line from the prayer we were taught to say at
bedtime: "And if I die before I wake." And those Grimm's tales
were standard bedtime fare. Annie
Judy,
I have 5 Icelandics, two are foals. I got Gloa a couple of years ago,
almost exactly 10 years after the last of my old Icelandics died. Gloa
is my primary riding horse. Then I got a really nice but unregistered
pinto mare from Dawn Shaw named Netta. Last Spring I got a mare named

I wish I could figure out how to contact these folks but their website
gives no clue. I feel sure these horses are related to my horses that
I had in West Virginia. The parents of my horses were sold to
Washington Island in 1966 to Arni Richter and Laurie Veness' father.
I'd love to see their ped
I know what some of the foals are used for. ONe friend of mine has a
riding camp for kids and 9 of her riding horses are the grown foals of
those mares. I know some other foals that were equally happily placed.
I wish those stories were the norm. Annie
I would say Apollo. He's the one who pulls the sun across the sky
with his team of horses. Annie
Name a horse in Norse mythology.
I love foxes, too. Once, in West Virginia, when I was mowing hay at
twilight, a fox followed me around and around the field, pouncing on
mice and rats as I uncovered their nests. Quite an opportunist!
Now, in Georgia, I listen to the "conversations" at night and marvel

Karen,
I don't know what size Simon, Connie and Betty Sue are, but coyotes
will get your small dogs and any cats. I don't think I would be very
comfortable with one being that close. Coyotes are really more of a
threat in this regard than foxes. Annie
Karen,
I agree, it's also been a scary summer for hay here in Georgia. I had
a bit of luck in May, before we knew we had a hay crisis. I leased my
one non-Icelandic to a very good riding camp a mile or so from me and
took Chigger's "salary" in fescue instead of dollars. (It's all green
stuff!) S
I just taught Beowulf to my 12th grade British Lit. class but the
film, now on DVD was a bit too raunchy. I couldn't get it approved to
show in class. The scenery and the scenes with horses were great and
the storm scenes were an actual storm, not special effects. Annie
And what about George Foreman, the fighter. Doesn't he have Icelandics.?

I've got room too, at least for now. I have inside and outside

Is Sally Swift still alive? She would be very old now if she is. Annie
Yes, I remember the name Von, but I can't recall what she looked like.
The most famous horse to come out of that herd was Skutla, of course.
Annie
Only one horse was rideable. Her name was Mosa, and she was a nice
reliable riding horse. Most of the others had never been handled and
none had been ridden. I had never trained a horse before but I had
done a fair amount of riding. My school friends and I "trained" all
the horses over a period o
All of the horses were moved to Berkeley Springs, West Virgina in
1965. If Ashelman made any private sales to individuals, I never
learned of that, though it is possible. The most likely explanation
for why Icelandics were in Maryland during those early years is
because I started selling them to
