Did you try with the current version?
My 2006 MacBook 2,1 (OS 10.7.5) is running version 37.0.2178.54 without an
issue.

How difficult is it to add said memory? The older iMacs (ca. 2005, 2006)
were very easy to upgrade in almost any category (RAM, HD, etc).

Bill et al,
The ISP is NOT doing its job! I work for one (local, not-for-profit) and we

In that case, and I've been there, try to clean the drum with isopropyl

if the caked toner is removable. A long shot but IMHO worth the effort.

Found recently https://fiplab.com/apps/memory-clean-for-mac that helps
somewhat speeding my ancient MacBook (2006 Core2 Duo, 2 GB, SSD). Give it a
try.
It helps with all those web pages that hog the RAM like there is no
tomorrow, and yes, closing unused tabs helps a LOT.

Seeing that CCC is pretty expensive (for someone on fix income), are there
any other recommended alternatives?
Looking for similar functionality, behaviour and much lower cost (free
would be very nice).
Any pitfalls with those alternatives?

You received this

IMHO, it is worth the money - go for the $80 option (lifetime support) vs.
the $40 1-year support.

While I support what Bruce says, before you commit $$$, check that the

I'd like to share with the group the final status of the 'slow iMac saga',

First and foremost, Merry Christmas (to those who celebrate and/or enjoy)

Need your collective wisdom to identify what is causing the above to slow
down.
The particulars are:
- late 2006 17" model 5,1
- OS is 10.6.8, with current updates
- stock HD 160 GB, ~1/2 full
- 2.5 GB RAM (stock was 2x 512 MB, so one 512 MB stick was exchanged with 2
