I use the free version of Avast! on my Mac (Mountain Lion) and get all sorts of notifications from viruses in emails, though I'm pretty sure that they are mostly for Windows. Even if you're not susceptible to many viruses, I think it's worth being a good cyber-neighbor to make sure that you're not

Western Digital until very recently made a limited selection of IDE/PATA drives under their Blue line, although they seem to be quite expensive on retail these days. Check eBay or Amazon, you can probably get a gently used or "refurbished" drive for a decent price. I haven't seen any over 500 GB.
