I made that mistake years ago with Earthlink and ever since then, I never use a
provider's email. I'm with Gmail, but Yahoo or a myriad of other options exist
where you're not tied to a company like that.

like using it as a POP3 account. Windows Live Mail will not allow one to
create message rules on an IMAP or an http email account,
