I noticed, at the Teachers showcase in Portland, (IOLI convention) there was
a fan mo8unted on clear acrylic fan sticks. Clever idea, as they did not
show through the lace.
I wonder if they were hand carved from Perspex, - or does anyone know if
they are commercially available?

Hello Again! Thank you Jean for posting the link to the vintage fan handles on
Ruby Lane. Those are exactly what came to my mind when I saw the handles! By
the 1950's, simple hand painted silk ones were still available in Oriental
shops but were otherwise few & far between. I haven't seen an
"Do you prefer to do a straight edge lace . or do you prefer a
pricking that is square with sewing at the end?"
I prefer the neater look of a worked corner, and the interest of doing the
corner as a change from the straight.

The bobbinlace group on flickr has some new photos of bobbin lace on display
at a Bavarian museum. Not all the pieces are Bavarian in style. One looks
like Honiton, another is a combination of continental guipure with a Beds-type
edging added. Also some modern stuff. Posted by Priit Halberg.

Hello Gentle Spiders,
I have a few question regarding edgings for handkerchiefs.
Do you prefer to do a straight edge lace and attach it to a handkerchief
blank working with ease around the corners, or do you prefer a pricking
that is square with sewing at the end? Which and why? Do you
I've just had an email from Hand Dyed Fibers and this is what she says.
They would be beautiful with lace!
I absolutely WILL ship overseas, if they're willing to pay the
extra postage. My flat rate shipping won't allow me to charge enough to
ship them overseas, so I have to adjust for that. I'

I wouldn't think they were worth that much either, but they are mounted in a
frame for hanging on the wall so I suspect the seller's thinking of them as
a work of art. I certainly wouldn't think they are worth that much. I didn't
pay anything like that for mine.

Thank you for the link, Jean. Those screens are pretty and I see how they
work now.
But without the leaf/screen, I wouldn't think just the handles are worth
that much money, and would anyone want all ten anyway?

They are very much like the ones I have, but those on ebay look as if
they've been "restored" to within an inch of their lives. I'd say they are
too polished and the gilding is too bright - there's no sign of use at all.
They are fan handles (face screen handles) and will have slots - those on
Hello All! I didn't mean to hit a nerve with anyone!!! I don't know anything
about mailing items globally, nor anything about VAT, customs, etc. etc. Vikki
has a global customer base for her threads so I simply asked the question as
"no global shipping" seemed odd to me. She promptly respond
Looking on e-bay for the chinese fan handles which Jean told us about, I
found item number 400090757426, described as a 'Collection of ten 19th century
Victorian fan handles' with a buy it now of £350.
Can someone tell me what they are, please.
I know what he says they are; fan and face screen ha
Talking about the fans has reminded me of this:
Yesterday at the lace meeting I went to someone was just finishing off a
Springetts decoration and he had only been able to get a bangle which was
quite a bit bigger than recommended. It is a simple design from their little
green book of patterns
The handle bit would be easy enough to make or have made, but I'm not sure
the ring of wire is actually a circular ring; I think it could actually be a
circle with four corners' or a 'square with curved sides', depending on how
you think of it. Either way, quite a hard shape to replicate withou

I would think that idea could easily be duplicated by any wood turner
(like my father) by making a wooden handle & inserting a ring of wire
with the ends firmly glued into the handle.
Thinking about it, as a lacemaker, I would prefer the 2 pieces separate

The seller of the fan handles doesn't say what the handle is made of. There
are several on ebay with a painted picture - I have a couple from many, many
years ago and the fabric is silk - and the handle is plastic. They are

I don't really understand what the problem is for this person. My US lace
supplier makes excellent use of flat-rate packets: one price for up to a
certain weight, regardless of number of items or their value.
Perhaps the seller is worried about insuring the shipment, which is indeed a

Following on from my previous post, another thing that occurred to me is
that one of these fan handles at $7.50 is inexpensive enough not to attract
customs duty. As soon as we start doing 'group' orders, for the UK at least,
import duties, VAT and Royal Mail handling charges will be added. So if
What fee! Surely the shipping is based on the size/weight of the item not
its value - unless she is insuring the package (optional to the buyer,
surely?) which for an $8 item I'd probably pass on.
But anyway, she won't be the one who is paying that, the buyer pays for the
shipping. Duh.
