I'm bemused as to why anyone would be concerned with making lace as fast as
possible, unless you have a deadline for a gift or an event such as a
wedding or a display/competition. It certainly can't be with an aim to sell
the lace because you could never make it fast enough to make a living.

y I encourage my students to try things out - I give them my way of
doing things, and why, but then I let them know that any method that gives
the desired end product is good, so long as it works for them. Life is too
short to do hobbies that make you unhappy!

I found this an interesting message. While I've made lots of small pieces,
done designs, taught others, taken lessons to learn new types of lace, I
also have a couple of pillows that have yardage on them.
They are my "go back to to relax and do some mindless lacemaking for a
while" pillows.

Hi Lynn - not really speed. I find I get into the swing of things and
obviously some patterns go a lot quicker than others. I do a fair bit of
Idrija which is quite quick to finish as there are so few pairs -just the
sewings slow you down, but they are easy because they are just into a loop.

Thinking in terms of lacemaking as a job, not a hobby, repetitive work
but requiring the attention of the operator, I liken it to
touch-typing in a later era.
Typing was something 'women could do' for income as was lacemaking.

You have raised several interesting topics. I've been making lace for 18
years. I started when I was working full time so I had limited time to put on
lacemaking. I've done more since retiring.
Lacemaking is not fast. Some people are faster than others...true for most
activities. They move
