Both code should be fairly in sync, but use the graeme version instead, it
may contain Lazarus specific fixes.

what is
Check if freetype-6.dll is in same dir as the executable or in windows dir.
Have you set the search path for font manager?
Something like this:
FontMgr.SearchPath := 'c:\windows;c:\windows\fonts';

Since you are updating data using direct SQL, you will need to close
and re open the dataset so the dataset record is in sync
