Hi folks,
I notice in the network configuration file, the default entry for DNS0
is the loopback address of 127.0.0.0. Right below that is another (but
commented out) DNS0 and DNS1. I see it says that those are where you'd
put your primary and secondary DNS settings. My questions is: Should I

Hi folks,
Is there a Dachstein/Linux equivalent to Microsoft's ipconfig /all so I
can see my complete info??? Do I have to be logged in as Root to execute
it? Thank you.

Hi folks,
I tried ifconfig while logged in as root, and I get a "ifconfig: not
found" error. I guess the full path has to be entered from the command
line. Can someone tell me what that is??? Thank you.

Hi folks,
I use the default, Dachstein CD firewall...so I don't know the answer to
this reply. Should I only have the 127.0.0.1 entry (doesn't Dachstein
use tinydns?)...or should I use my LAN computers and my Dachstein
firewall as resolvers and include the addresses of my appropriate DNS
servers f

This is simply because you are not specifying it properly and are probably
setting your self static, or configuring DNS incorrectly.
If you are completely dynamic you should get your domain info with the
dhclient lease. Otherwise in your network.conf specify domains as

I sent the prior reply you quote below. The reasons I said it "depends" is
because it does. There is no single *right* answer to the follow-up
question you ask. What is best for you depends on a detailed view of the

With me, the start sector is 2 too!
And works fine, but for work i have to put the partition with FAT < 32mb
And put CHS instead of LBA in BIOS!

Try syslogd -r on your destination host.

I've just tried out dachstein-CD for the first time (after using
eigerstein for a long while). Just a dream and nice to have a full bash
prompt and the rest... :-)
Few quick questions:
- which package backs up the directory "/root"? After setting up the
backup options, I've tried local, root

Hello everyone,
I was wondering if when/how will the $BORDER_RTR parameter of
/etc/ipfilter.conf will be set. I can't find
the variable in /etc/init.d/network and /etc/network.conf. I'm going
thru the ipfilter details for my quest of
improving my own ipchain script.

Just gambling here but couldn't a packet coming from the inside
with an echo request or (probably any data destined for 0.0.0.0)
provoke this kind off response?
A capture of network traffic should help you out if that is
the case.

Good point. If there was a machine on the LAN that was
trying to ping (or otherwise connect with) 0.0.0.0, it could
generate this sort of response. But...hmmm...would the "destination
unreachable" reply be said to come *from* 0.0.0.0? I would think
it would be from my ISP's routers. O
