Just a word of advice.
*Never* *EVER* incorporate a GEDCOM into your "real file" unless you have first
imported it into its own database and checked it and cleaned it up as to
sources, notes, etc. Also check for duplicates that might be in your "real"
file" and either mark them for merging l
Try this:
File
Close Family File
Import From
During the subsequent screens, you'll have a chance to name your new file.

I always create a new file, using the main name of the
family for a file name. When using Gedcom it asks for
a filename. Then when I have fixed the locations and
naming rules, I add them to my main file.

When you Import a Gedcom, you'll get a screen asking whether you want
to add it to the family file that is open or to a new family file.
Importing to a new family file is the default and recommended.
When the file is cleaned up to your standards of data entry, then
import this new Legacy file
When I receive or download a GEDCOM from another source, I would like
to be able to open it in Legacy as a new, separate file, with
assurance that it is not going to come into my "real" file. I'm sure
everyone does this often, but I have not had occasion to try it
before. So, I have two questions:
Open Legacy and start a new family file. Then Import your gedcom into
it. You cannot mix it up with your other one unless you import it into
that one. When you want to join the two you can use Split Screen or
import one Legacy file into the other and then use the Merge function.

Glad to hear it did work - I wasn't sure, with it having the sex correct,
and the positions wrong (which seems pretty wierd) - but thankfully it
did work. I also hadn't considered the 2nd marriage possibility, so will
keep that in mind of something like that happens to me
:)

I've been sent a GEDCOM file by a distant cousins, and have been trying
to import it into Legacy. The first time I did this, the error log said
that a few people had the wrong sex assigned to them. I opened the
GEDCOM in Notebook and found and corrected each one.
Then I deleted the .fdb and

Pamela,
Are you attempting to open the gedcom file using the "open" option under
the file menu? If you are, you are using the wrong option. Under the
file menu you must select the "import" option. This will import the
gedcom file into Legacy. You will need to show Legacy where the gedcom
