I would like to thank everyone for all their thoughts and suggestions. As a diehard paper based records genealogist I am slowly making the transition to Legacy even though it is only the free download at the moment.
Your comments have made me realise that for me it will depend on what I want from
Hi Pat,
I'm not sure my preferences are relevant.
If I'm checking how something looks, I usually use the Descendant
Book Report because that's the one I use most. However, some things
(eg source citations and event sentences), if you've chosen the same
relevant options, look the same in all

For instance if one enters the source type as census, the screen should

page # etc). If the type is an archival document, the entry fields titles
should also change accordingly guiding
This is great; I didn't know -- or had forgotten about the Source Samples.
As a result, I just had what I consider to be a great idea!
On my Internet Favorites list, I just added a folder named GENIE-LEG,
and while I was at the URL listed below (for the Sample Sources) I added
it to that folder

An apology:
As the user who started this thread I wish to issue an apology and a
clarification. In no way was I intending to start a flame. For what it is
worth, I think Legacy is a superb genealogy program. It has numerous
features that make it an excellent choice for any genealogist
Someone may have already mentioned this but, after I watched the training
videos and reviewed Evidence for citation examples, I spent a bit of time coming
up with citations for the various censuses (in my case USA and Canada), WWI
draft registrations, SSDI information, etc., and typed them
Great idea! I am trying to teach my children the importance of
entering the source, not just the "exciting part" of newly found
information. Providing them with a template to follow would make this
much easier and enjoyable for them now, and more useful for all
concerned in the future.

Cathy,
May I ask, If YOU were going to do some experimenting, what would you
start with for printing out--what reports? I think I want an Ancestor
book for my mother's side, but perhaps a descendasnt book for my father's
side.
I like factual detail, pictures, narrative, stories, sources.

Ihave to agree with you there. I am a new user to Legacy and have spent ages inputting all the census data into events, or certificate details into say Marriagenotes, Death certificate into death notes- I had failed to understand about the source details. I have been reading odd things about
Jeff,
The flexibility of Legacy is, in my opinion, an asset and not an impediment
To take your example of a census, for me this a source and not an event. The
census records events, or if you prefer facts; these being name,
approximate age and place of birth, residence and occupation. Thus

I hear you Ron and you make excellent points. However, I would counter that
without a suggested entry path, you will have data entered one way here and
another way there and sometimes even duplicated in both. My memory is not as
good as yours because without prompts I cannot always remember
I feel I need to weigh in here. I suspect 40% of the entries on this list are, in one way or another, related to recording sources. As a relatively new genealogist, I picked up Legacy on recommendations. I did not know the importance of formatting sources and how there were standards to meet

Actually I agree with you that census is not really an event.
I have to say that I do not understand why a Census should not be
treated as an Event. To me, an Event is anything that happens to a
person during their life (and after, in the case of Burial!). Being

Before my airplane takes off, let me share a few thoughts
First, to respond to how to record a census. I do add census information to
an event, although a census is more of a source. However, because that
census event has been entered, it will appear on the chronology showing me a

Thank you Geoff!
I had forgotten about these templates. They are very helpful. I am
now printing them for my reference.
Thanks again.

I am very inclined to agree. I too am a relatively new Legacy user, and
have not yet decided where to put much of my source data. I would like very
much to see what others do so that I can get some ideas of how to do
