I was surprised to see something so off topic here, but I had not heard about
this yet. Thank you for sharing, but in an international and specific venue,
not everyone will appreciate it.
God bless,

Ron, I have been mulling over your answer.
I agreed with the idea of Joan using "online database" because the online
database she was using contained a congomeration of data from many sources.
However, if I'm reading your answer correctly (which I may not be!), you're

John, I'm sure others here will gasp, but I haven't used the repository in
forever. It's probably because my main sources are US censuses and various
state birth/marriage/death agencies. As you stated, the names and locations of
these state (county, too) agencies do change over time, so I just us
I like the Picture Center, but only for pictures... that is, if I have a picture
of several Irish cousins, the Picture Center makes it quick & easy to attach the
picture to each individual. Though I've never experienced a crash, I have found

I a hoping that if/when the day comes to move to another software that
it will read native Legacy files. Also, a message was posted recently
about Legacy sharing it's templates with a group working on making the
transfer between systems manageable. Hopefully that will be in place

Thanks, James. Yes, more than I asked for but very informative and I
appreciate your taking the time to write it. Now I have to think
again about whether to convert my sources to all basic or sourcewriter
or just keep a mixture. I definitely will split many of my lumped
sources. I don't do much
I've got several very similar Legacy files ... I'd like to find out
how many pictures are attached to each one.
Is there any way to get this number?
I looked through the help files and archives and couldn't come up with
an answer.
Have I overlooked the obvious?

I have not stopped using Source Writer. I'm a computer guy, not a
word smith, so I do like being prompted for the correct information
and having that information formatted correctly for me - at least
within Legacy and in reports produced by Legacy. The export to a 3rd
party is still an issue that

Would you enter the location (mail address, phone number, etc.) of the

which may be many years in the past, or would you use the current

James,
I notice that several months ago you were contemplating dropping
Source Writer and going with the Basic system. Did you? If not, what
changed your mind?

You're not the only one! I hardly ever go in there at all because I
find it so difficult.
Sorry, that's not a lot of help to you, but perhaps a few others will
feel they are not along if they are struggling too.

Thanks Jennifer, Jenny and James. The "Output" tab is what I was
looking for. Wonder why I didn't think of that? The "M8 Free Clip"
was a great tip. I downloaded it and love it. I have not used Access,
but I will try converting Sourcewriter to Basic using LTools.
Thanks again to all who responded
Sources are in two parts Master and Detail. When entering these
parts, there is a tab in each instance called "Text/Comments". On the
"Assigned Sources" screen, this tells you from which part the info is
coming from.

Kirstin,
Sorry, but I cannot really help as I do not like, nor use, the Picture
Centre. I have the impression, rightly or wrongly, that it is too easy to
mess things up with it. Having said that there is no excuse for a crash. I
would report this as a bug, but please remember that you will need to

I'm struggling with the picture center. Let me try to explain. I have
Census jpg files where the don't belong. Loads of them. I don't know how
they got there, but they are always in 2s. They are attached to a census
event, but not the right one. The correct picture is attached to the
