I have several "essays" written by others that I would like to include in
my family file somewhere, but I'm not certain the best location to put
them. Should I put them as sources, general notes, event notes, etc???

database, and it's not too long (such as the two-page essay you
mention), I would transcribe the essay into the Text/Comments field of
the Source Detail, so it was attached to each item of data you extracted
from it.

would want to record them as a source just as you would an email from
someone letting you know of a new arrival in the family.

This is an interesting situation that I had not thought of
I have a copy of a letter written to his brother by my great-great
grandfather while he was in the hospital during the Civil War. I'm
entering that as a Military history event since it discusses his
experiences in the hospital.
There's not much in it to use as a source for other information though
