You can't do it w/Lingo - you need an Xtra.
I use DirectOS from updateStage (updateStage.com).

oops...sorry, of course you're right...DirectOS is
from directXtras.
The MUI Xtra (in my humble opinion) can be a bit difficult
for a new Lingo programmer. The RavWare MUI Maker utility
(if Al didn't mention it already) which *is* sold/distributed
by updateStage makes using the MUI Xtra a whole
grin now I know...I got hold of it myself.
Big help for novices like me.

I'd like your advice on a small design issue:

Folks...
I'm also a huge Lingo/Director fan and am not elated about the idea of
eventually having to go to Flash/ActionScript. I do have
some other tools in my kit so with some luck I'll never be

Hi Oliver,
The CD Xtra provides control over playback
of MPEG...however, actual decoding is left up to a third party decoder -
either an embedded encoder (Zoran's SoftPEG)
which requires no installation by the end-user or a software or hardware
decoder already installed on the end-user's
Oliver,
BTW, any reason why you're working with MPEG-2? Not usually
advisable for anything outside of limited distribution type stuff
where you have control over the target machine config (like a kiosk, for
instance).
Sounded like flexibility was one of your main project requirements!?
Josie
you may want to check those costs before
going this route.

Magnus,
Audio Xtra from updateStage allows you to grab level from the mic input.
Beyond that, the latest version of Audio Xtra does away with the use of MCI
and adds a host of other very cool features for working w/audio.
