; no.
The multipath= parameter is for switching off multipathing in the
initrd, ie for the root fs. And as you already pointed out it's platform
agnostic.
Why did you think it's somewhat platform dependent?

Voila.
Or is there a patch for z/Series SLES 9 to support root on multipath?
Nope. SP4 at earliest. But still to be decided.

No, unfortunately not.
mkinitrd includes all _activated_ DASDs, in numerical order.
If you need a specific order I'd suggest using persistent device names.

elaborate resource management / setup quirks in doing this.
We do have some ideas, though, so if anyone has a 4-book z990 to spare
we could surely give it a go ...

So recreating the initrd with 'mkinitrd; zipl' should fix it.

Please teach me.
Do not, repeat _not_, use raw devices for that.
Raw devices will overwrite the DASD disklabel if you are not careful,
rendering the device unuseable at the next ipl.
What are you trying to achieve anyway?

as how to get a 31-bit install accomplished at this time.
Hmm. From what I've been told you just need to ipl 'sles8' instead of
'sles8x' to install a 31-bit system. No other changes needed.
And yes, you do need a separate instance for it.
Does that help ?
