As an aside, does anybody use UNIX message queues any more? I can find
some information on them via Google, but I'm not aware of any actual
application on my Linux system which uses them. Assume for the nonce
that I am only speaking of IPC within a given system.

I have a strange question from customer. They claim, their C/C++
application performs purely when running as non-root. Under root it
performs well. I have no other info ! Not even what exactly is the nature
of application, I know they use threads there and message queuing (not MQ,

There is no IBM Linux for System z (or any other platform for that
matter). Commercially, there is either Novell's SUSE Linux (SUSE Linux
Enterprise) or RedHat (Redhat Enterprise Linux).

In these SLES9 from SLES7 installation and SLES10 upgrade from SLES9
discussions, there is an excellent clue! Look at the /var/log/YaST2/y2log
file, it is loaded with helpful information. I discovered why I could not
install SLES9 while SLES10 was a breeze. Same Hercules installation, etc...

My installation is SUSE 10 running on the Hercules S/390 emulator running on
RedHat. It all runs fine (rather slowly but it runs). I notice two things.
First even at idle, the CPU is burning through about a million
instrutions/sec. Also it's constantly beating the emulated dasds. Does
anyone else r

Thanks guys it works now. Lessons from the experience:
1. Just because you can get stuff from the Novell FTP server doesn't mean
that you should. Use the publically available downloads.
2. Give your Hercules machine at least 512 MB, preferably 1GB. I was
initially using a 256MB machine and it was
