Surge + Martin, many thanks for your fast response. Sorry, the cause of the fault is obviously NOT the (latest?) version of the raid tools. I just downloaded raidtools-19990824-0.90.tar.gz which seems to be the latest one on ftp.de.kernel.org and comiled it on my machine. Same result as before.
