Ok, so I tried removing the filter on strider (remember gandalf has the
printer, strider is a client trying to print to gandalf's printer; both run RH
8.0). And I still see the same result.
The printcap now looks like:

I must be doing someting drastically wron in trying to setup wu-ftpd.
after setting up ftpaccess ~group ~hosts ~users on a RH 7.3 box (and
yes i did the ftp/etc lib and bin thing) when I try to ftp into that box
(the other side of the lake) I get connected to IP address and
that's it. NO PROMPT,
