Nial, It depends on your distribution. I thought that all distros started the display manager out of /etc/inittab until I used SuSE (7.2). This distro starts it as a service in /etc/init.d/. So, one of these places should be the right place to start xdm, but it depends on your distribution

Sorry, I should have made myself clearer. I use a text login on the server, but kdm needs to be running to allow LTSP clients to get the graphical login. Originally, it was starting up all on its own, but now I have to run kdm manually before the clients will get a login box. I might just add
