A brief update on this statement: " this morning I tried upgrading
the clients chroot to kernel 3.0.0-14 and the clients stopped working.
Had to revert to 3.0.0-12."
On a mostly-identical server, I made a fresh client from 3.0.0-14, and
that seems to work. So, probably not the kernel's fault...
As Rüdiger suggested, I'm pretty certain the issue is the graphics
driver, but I don't know how to fix it. It could even be the ethernet
driver, but graphics seems more likely.
I'm using nvidia-current because it's the only driver that will work
