If you really want to know if tftpd is running, do this:
netstat -an | grep ":69 "
(Notice there is a space between the 69 and the closing quote.)
If tftpd and xinetd are configured properly, you should see
a line like this:
udp0 0 0.0.0.0:690.0.0.0:*
