having an appropriate jig to be able to carry this out as
fast as possible (forget about go-bars; I do not think they are a good
idea at all, unless one could tension several at the same time!)
try it before you give up, I think you will find it a popular solution
with many luthiers.
One other thing I've found useful when gluing up with hide glue is an
electric tacking iron, which you can buy at hobby stores. A glue
joint returns to being workable if it's warmed up, especially if you
do it right away. So if I'm gluing the ribs of a bowl together I
just slap on the

Hi All,
Thanks for weighing in on this topic. I've been using 315, and I think I'm
ready to order some lower strength. It's been good to use especially when
you want the fast tack and I've adapted my technique to suit. I would never
be able to use Tim's method of glueing the braces all in one go
serves to dry out the wood if there is any residual moisture. Part of the fun
for an amateur is figuring all this stuff out.

Chad,
Well, it's a small anvil. About a foot long. A blacksmith's anvil
would definitely be overkill. I

Greetings to all.
I'm missing something here. What's the use of gluing all the braces at
once?
Best regards,

The Purpose of gluing on all the braces on the soundboard at once is that
it is easier then to control some very important factors.
I can see all that, but I wonder at setting up all those bars
simultaneously, I would have thought it more practical to work from the
center bars towards each
that about as well. If I was making lutes for
sale I would probably go to more trouble.

I'm wondering what gram strength glue other builders out there are
using.
there are other traditional glues beyond hide glue, fish glue and rabbit
glue are sometimes mentioned. fish glue is similar, but not identical;
rabbit glue is a particular quality of hide glue.
I have only a modest amount of experience, but I've been using the
192 gram strength from LMII and have only had a problem with glue
failures on the bridge. And that, I think, was due to my
inexperience in gluing on bridges, not because of the glue itself.
After a few problems I got some
