i have found the answer to my question about i-tunes.
i decided to do a vo shift m on the names of the files i wanted
to delete in i-tunes and that gave me the option to delete which
wasn't dimmed.

You have to make sure you remove Drop Box from you login items in your User
Account setting of System Preferences. When Drop Box installs, it ends up
starting at boot up. You need to manually remove it from the login items and
then restart before attempting to reinstall the application.
I looked. no installer window. I used the application chooser, the item chooser
and everything else . no go. I did this about 4 or 5 times and no installer
window at all.

The best way to find this is to go to the status menus, it's shown there, you
can usually see the time remaining as well as the percentage.
