Actually I'm not at the moment having great issues with gmail; I left Mavericks
on my iPad Air but went back to Mountain lion on my iMac and am mostly doing
email there. But I still would like to change to icloud. I have alreadyu copied

You can also keep the old Apple ID but change the primary email associated with
it. This is what I have done. I've kept my old Apple ID but changed the email
address. A bit less hassle to change an Apple ID on all devices, and the emails
still come through to your new active email address.
