and your saying, voiceover reads the 3rd party icon in the status bar when the
mouse pointer is over it? Now, I haven't tried this in a while but, I remember
this not being the case. It might have reported Apple icons like time machine
and wifi etc, but not 3rd party icons.

Hi,
This is absolutely working in Lion.
Make sure you enable "speak the text under the mouse" option in
VoiceOver Control Panel. The easiest way to do this is by opening
VoiceOver Panel and then typing the word "mouse" into the search box.

Try Control-F8. I don't know why VO-M twice isn't working for you,
but the regular keyboard shortcuts for the Mac can also be used.
Control-F8 is the same as VO-M twice.

There are shortcuts both in VoiceOver and for the Mac in general to move to
the status menu bar. In VoiceOver, pressing VO-M (Control-Option-M) once takes
you to the application menu bar, pressing VO-M twice takes you to the status
menu bar, and pressing VO-M three
