You are correct in that it will not be bootable when just copied over. Sorry,
making a MacOS installer bootable works for me, but Linux is a different
animal. I'm not sure how it can be done.

In vlc, press cmd O to bbring up the open dialog and select the folder
that has the files you want. Now that the foder is selected, select the
opeen button and in a few seconds the files should start playing. I do
this all the timme if I have stuff I want to play. HTH.
