I was afraid of that. Darn it! But, I'm glad you got it worked out. Enjoy
the new Air & good luck.

Hi C.J.
Well, I would have been happy to oblige, but I changed my mind. Sorry! lol

Donna,
If you do throw the MBA out the window, could you please let me know ahead of
time where you live, which window your planning to eject the computer through,
& what time you're planning to conduct the launch? Also, could you email me
this information privately, off list, so as to avoid c
Hi Tim,
thanks for this. I contacted Apple and they confirmed Cody's statement that
you can use a time-machine backup to transfer data. I seem to be having better
luck with that, I was prompted to change the name on the MBP account, and
everything seems to be backing up. God only knows what
Hi Donna,
The reason that the Migration Assistant does not like you having the same name
is for data security purposes. The easiest thing to do here is to simply make
sure that the name on the MBA is slightly different the original one. For
example, use just Donna instead of your full name.
Sorry, Cody, my bad. I meant Lion, not Leopard.
Cheers,
Donna

Hi Dan,
Yeah, that would be my concern about backing up from time machine as well.
It's looking like I may need to have a chat with Apple tech support today

With time machine, you aren't restoring the actual operating system, you are
just moving over your applications, data, and user settings, just as it was on
your previous machine. It needs to be said though you need to have a deticated
drive, about 1tb in size or 500gb for the images of time mach
Yes, time machine will work, but I'm not certain on whether or not the
migration assistant update is included or not in 10.5.8 or not. If you've done
all software updates then I see no problem in why it wouldn't work. Actually
come to think of it, I don't think the migration assistant update wou
wow, is that advisable. Your restoring an OS configured on different hardware
to a different set of hardware and probably some driver differences. Now, if
people tell me it works, great, but, I don't think it's recommended.
Personally, I used my external drive which had a complete backup of my
Thanks, Cody. Wouldn't the migration assistant have been upgraded as part of
the Leopard upgrade? Also, both the MBA and the MBP are running Leopard,
10.71. So I can just restore from the time machine backup and that will work?
Thanks,
Donna

Ugh! Yes, I wanted to spend some time playing with it before I moved all my
data over, and they didn't tell me not to do that at the store. Do you know if
I can restore from a time-machine backup instead?
Thanks,
Donna

One option is instead of using the migration assistant, to use time machine,
make a backup of your pro, and then load that image onto your air. That for
sure will work.. Also, if your pro is running leopard, not snow leopard, make
sure you've got the latest updated migration assistant..

Did you create an account when you first got the macbook air, or are you trying
to do this during the initial set up? If you already created an account during
the initial set up, you will probably want to reinstall your operating system
and transfer the account information during the initial set
no problem!
i love it when people find my help useful!

I looked in system prefs rather than finder whn trying to see the file
structure. Hopefully deleting the user folder will solve my migration asst
issue.

Hi all,
I'm trying to transfer my data from my MBP to my MBa using the migration
assistant. Every time I am at the point of starting the transfer, I get an
error message that the transfer can't happen because the user account on the
MBA has the same name as the one on my MBP, go figure, given
