I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this but recently, Safari reader opens

I can confirm this issue no longer happens with Lion.
I used to experience the same problems whilst reading UK online newspapers.
Am pleased to say that annoying issue is now history.
That Macworld article read flawlessly.

When it finds an article, the reader is a big time saver over moving by header

a bit of text and then a bunch of junk followed by the full article. One key

Some time back, I reported a bug to the Accessibility team at Apple, namely

Hello Mary,
In Lion Safari reader only speaks each link once, so that bug must have been
fixed.
One small annoyance that persists is that the reader appends clickable to
each section of text you read, so when you're going through an article you're
regularly hearing clickable.

Are you in groups or dom mode? I have seen this behavior in groups mode

Hi Colin,
Once in the reader, you should not have to start with vo a. It should just read
out to you. That's the cool thing about the reader. It doesn't always find the
article, but if it does, it should just read straight through, no vo A or any
other intervention required.

One thing that could be happening here, sometimes links are labeled with text

Try using Safari Reader (Command-Shift-R) to read the NY Times article. (For
some reason, you're stopping at the linked word iPad. At least, I assume
your reading stopped at the link, and not because you need to register to read
the site).

It allows you to put articles on one page and makes them easier to read. Not
