Your best bet is to set it and forget it. Get a level at the beginning and leave some headroom (I like to be below -6db, and -12 is not bad) for the loud passages. It is not necessary to be near 0db as you will get clipping if it goes at all beyond that. The key is the microphones. Using powered

I have Sound Forge and have used it to edit MP3 files. What actually happens is that SF decodes the MP3 file (if you have the plug-in) and allows you to edit it or add effects, do mastering or whatever you like. Then when you save it, it encodes it as MP3 again. SF is a dynamite tool for editing

Three things will solve this problem: 1. Get a bass roll-off filter. Heavy bass will drown out a lot of other frequencies. It's not the MDs fault if all that's left for it to encode is heavy bass. 2. Get better mics - the digital noise is primarily due to lack of definition from the mics
