Your best bet is to set it and forget it. Get a level at the beginning and
leave some headroom (I like to be below -6db, and -12 is not bad) for the
loud passages. It is not necessary to be near 0db as you will get clipping
if it goes at all beyond that. The key is the microphones. Using powered

Hi,
a few days ago someone was enquiring about batteries for the MD 161. Well, this
is what I have found out. The handbook cautions about using NiCad batteries.
There is no problem with using NiCads, despite what the manual says. You will
have to charge them up externally. The MT161 from Comet, D

Sounds like you need a high pass filter (or otherwise termed as a bass
roll-off filter) to help cut down the amount of bass getting to your
recorder.
Personally, I haven't recorded a rock gig, par

I don't think it's the ATRAC that is causing your problem. I have recorded
several concerts with my Sharp 702 (same ATRAC) and two of them had very
heavy bass which reproduced fine. What microphones are you using? Mine are

Do they record pre- recorded MDs with old ATRAC technology?

I don't feel that MD was invented for any particular genre in music, it's

Just like when CD was invented, it wasn't created simply for classical

As far as the clarity is concerned, I think that MD is more than suit

Not really. Mp3's at their usual bitrate suck compared to ATRAC anyway
because of the more limited frequency response.

I have Sound Forge and have used it to edit MP3 files. What actually happens
is that SF decodes the MP3 file (if you have the plug-in) and allows you to
edit it or add effects, do mastering or whatever you like. Then when you
save it, it encodes it as MP3 again. SF is a dynamite tool for editing
Three things will solve this problem:
1. Get a bass roll-off filter. Heavy bass will drown out a lot of other
frequencies. It's not the MDs fault if all that's left for it to encode is
heavy bass.
2. Get better mics - the digital noise is primarily due to lack of
definition from the mics
