know if i could kick-start my 1150 GS even if it did have the option,...
and i know for a fact that there's no way it's going to bump-start
with a battery that's too flat to keep the EFI computer awake.

I second Larry's thoughts. Measure several times, cut once! Since you have
access to the car all the time, take the time for a considered diagnosis vs
throwing parts and labor at it. Remember that the leading cause for
maintenance is previous maintenance.

Maybe it's only the valve guide seals (that keep oil from getting sucked
through guides) that need to be replaced. They are much easier and cheaper
to fix (no need to pull head but you'll need a valve spring compressor).
You use compressed air into spark plug hole to hold the valves closed but
it'
looks like the valve guides may be toast on the new to me 300E. :-( Just
did the plugs and they are filthy with caked on burnt oil. changed them out
and went for a quick run. Already, when I pull the new plugs, I see oil.
