No problems today, only thing I did was change the main fuel filter. I consider this solved, although I still plan to change the tank strainer eventually (have had the parts for several years now). Guy here at the office stood and watched while I changed the filter yesterday during lunch break.

I think you might be on the right track about the dimmer, and I think several list members recommend just wiring around it as the dash lights are dim enough to not blind you. When I had some of the other issues you describe it turned out to be a good fuse [tested by multi-meter] whose contact

Max: The vacuum pump on my 95 E300D disintegrated. So the pumps from that year must still be vulnerable. And Marshall was correct. There is a cam mounted on the front of the fuel injection pump that drives the vacuum pump. It is kind of like a wobble disk. The surface of that cam was trashed

Are there other openings to the oil pan that could be used to gain access? I don't remember any other openings in that oil pan. Some other OM60x engines (like the 603?) have a large plate on the right side that can be removed. But these 606 variants have a fully enclosed sump. Ned

I don't recall a sub-sump or pan on the 606 engine. There is only a large, baffled oil pan. Removing that oil pan with the engine in-situ, required a significant part of the work needed to pull the engine. So I just pulled the engine. Besides, I prefer to work on things when I can have plenty

Have a puzzle-yesterday came out of post office and fired up the 240D-hear racket-thought it was fan-turned out to be starter. Kept running even after shutting off ignition . No Bendix engagement- finally had to disconnect battery as starter was getting hot. (Didn't have hammer to bang solenoid)
