There's no need to go to all this trouble when filling the tank. Just record
the gallons and the miles and over time you'll have a good average.
There are many things besides fill that can affect fuel economy on a single
tank; it's not really meaningful to look at tank-by-tank MPG.

The battery voltage was low for a day or two when I first put it in, but then
it came back up to 13-14 with the engine running. Annoying this would happen.

have averaged about 21 miles per US gallon of diesel. The best was about 27 mpg
and the worst was about 18 mpg.
Some were road trips and some were pretty well all city driving. Some
Regulator is usually in the alternator these days.
Have the charging system checked, something is wrong if you are going
through batteries that fast, likely overcharging.

This is the first sizzling stinking battery I've seen but the second yellow top
that has died. The last one was 9-12 months ago, also in the Jeep. That one
gave no indications or advance warning. It just wouldn't start after I came
out of a restaurant. It was very difficult to jump
