This computer has a hardware diagnostic tool that you can access at startup. Ran that, it tests memory, HDD, CMOS, system board etc. It passed every test except the SMART extended test on the HD. It past the short SMART test but not the extended, it also passed the surface scans. Hard drive

Sounds like an intermittent problem in the motherboard. You might try a fan blowing right on the MB to see if that prevents the problem. Of so, it's something thermal and you'll probably play hell finding it. I had similar symptoms with two PCs that were fixed by "new" motherboards from online s
