I have had that happen on a 95 e300, my 97 e300, and my 98 e300. I had some warning though as it started making noise for a while before it sheared off completely. Basically what happened in my case was I could hear a rattling noise and the charge light could come on at low rpm, like the shaft

Hmm, that alternator has the clutched pulley (I recently installed one on the alternator on The White Whale). I'll bet it was the clutched pulley that crapped the bed, not the alternator. New pulley is about 30 bucks, then you need a special tool (I have it) to install. Are the alternator shaft
