Never looked at a 116. IIRC 115 has had both types, the roller on leaf spring
and the sliding ball
Could a R107 strap work? ( not knowing, since I have not needed to do those
straps). From my PnP scrounging tours, the check straps for w115, 116, 123
and 126 all looked very much alike. I did not get to scrounge many coupes. I
do recall the w124 had different sort of check strap than
Good idea!
Be sure the old one doesn’t have a failed strap, that is, the two captive metal
balls that have the spring between them. That’s another failure mode for these
as well. The peened metal that holds one of the balls captive in the strap can
fail, and the ball pops out into the door
Thanks curt but I think we will skipwelding. Might try to rebuild old one
or buy 100 & fit 114mm strap to new check.

You need the wider sweep to better get in and out. Longer door = less angle to
open, meaning it has to angle out farther to allow easy egress/ingress.
Having owned one of these as well as an R129 I can attest to the need for the
wider sweep.

Also heavier. I suspect that this is a greater factor than the swing.

Does anybody, for example South Carolina Floyd, have a 123 coupe and a
123 sedan/wagon handy?
If so, what's the angular difference between the fully opened doors, and
why would the larger door need a wider sweep angle, other than to whack
nearby parked cars with?

I was thinking the same thing, I don't think 1/2" is going to translate into a
whole lot less door swing...

Typically the “balls” that support the roller wear out or fall out, preventing
the roller from moving along the slide. They can also freeze in place,
preventing the door from being opened/closed.
I also wonder if you couldn’t use a sedan version and just have a limited door
swing. I realize
Or just fabricate a new one from parts or new stock.

My thoughts exactly, Curt. If there is no real difference apart from
length, it ought to be reasonably easy to add some metal.
Did Dwight ever say what was wrong with the original? Maybe it could be
repaired?

MB cares a hell of a lot more than BMW. Try getting parts for a BMW 2002
through the dealer. They won’t even recognize the VIN.

14mm is about half an inch although I don't suppose the precise length matters
all that much. Somebody that was good with a welder should be able to cut a
sedan version and add half an inch of strap steel. A TIG welder would be best
for fine control and minimal splatter but I could
Yes. Gotta love the classic Center.

Perfect example of MB stepping up and building new parts that were

Yes rare. Classic center said they just remade some. It is for a friend of

I did some digging and only came up with the OE part. You can find it at a
number of the RevParts sellers for under $250.00, but I don’t see any
alternatives.
Sorry.
If it’s any consolation they’re trading on eBay for upwards of $350 for the
uninitiated.
I would say to bite the bullet and
I am looking for a door stop/check strap for a 123 coupe. They are
different from sedan and wagon. MB Classic has one for 250.00. (ouch)
Yesterday I found a URO one for much cheaper but I can't find it today.
Parts # is 123 720 03 16. Strap length is 114mm while sedan is 100mm.
