No self-destructing harness, that started in the early '90s.
The seats are leather (not Tex), and they

Everything Alex said, I second. AC could just be a oring, or a compr
or the evap. that is a total crapshoot.
Seats are some upholstery shop recover. Appears to have 4 speakers
added in the front door panels. Residue from leaking coolant is
common at the front left side, in front and below
No wiring harness problems, seats are a cheap recovery

Those seats are not just wrong, they're a crime.

Hey, that's the same colour as my car, but I have the normal MBtex seats,
and my rims are a bit more tidy.

That actually seems low to me, should be able to get low to mid 20's
The EPA estimates for an 86 300E are 16 city and 20 highway. I can rarely
get as high as the EPA estimates - even with the new revised numbers.
So, should I really expect 15 or so in town and less than 20 on the
highway?
I get a little better than the EPA estimate on teh TE -- 18 or so in
town (although it's rarely driven in real city traffic) and 21-24 on
the highway.
You should do better, higher gearing on the TE.

The 300 does alright on the open road but sucks around town, I get about
14-15L/100ks around town and 10-12 cruising at 110kmh but it should be a
little better than that, however the engine has done a lot of work and
may need to see a doctor. As the parts wear the mileage will decrease.
I took that car for a little drive again today, it sure is growing on me.

How hard is it to change out a 300E alternator? I'm sorely tempted by

It probably just needs the brushes/regulator package replaced - and
perhaps the slip rings cleaned up. That's what happened in my '90
300D.
