You can use a tig torch at low amperage on the heads to heat them red hot
without melting anything. Or put a big nut on the head and weld the inside
to the xzn with a bit of filler. First approach definitely easier under the
car.

It is blue, but the bolt was dipped in it. With the shallow head of the
axle bolts, it IS a problem, because they strip out at about 70 ft lb.I
was gonna go out yesterday and see if I could buy hardened torx head bolts.
The triple square is PIA, but ok on the head bolts. On the soft
shallow
I did have those axle bolts back out on my 123 wagon, when I carried a very
heavy load of tile about 20 miles. I don't remember the details for sure,
but I think I had re-installed the original bolts with no loctite.

crossmember in a 124 prevents you from removing the back plate. you'd
have to drop out the diff first. not so easy on a 124. Believe me, I
considered it.

axles with good boots and proceed. or not. It took me hours to get
one bolt loose without stripping the ZXF head on the soft bolt. the
