I agree on the urgency, unless you are careful to apply my technique:
Before you shut off the vehicle,
1. place the wheel just in the middle of its slop.
2. turn the key all the way to zero, then back to position one.
3. this way its all ready for your next start, and it is not locked up
4. if
I should mention that the condition I describe is not caused by a bad
tumbler. I bought and replaced one to no benefit.

I had a similar problem on my coupe that was solved by squirting a bit
of Marvel Mystery Oil into/onto the lock pin that goes from the ignition
lock cylinder chamber to the steering column. Has worked flawlessly for
at least 2 years now. I did replace the lock cylinder too.

I've removed the ignition cylinder. So how will I know if it's a bad
cylinder or a bad lock/ignition mechanism? Should I go ahead and get a new
cylinder to see if that's the fix? I'd hate to get the new cylinder and
install it then the cylinder becomes stuck again because it was the lock
Its the cylinder, without a doubt. But, if you have it out and it still
wont turn with a screwdriver, then its not the cylinder. But, as I
said, its 99.99% sure that it is.

Rusty; I know the tumbler cylinder is very reasonable; 'think the lock is,

I'll give Rusty a call tomorrow and order the cylinder. For now, a
screwdriver turns the assembly with ease.
Thanks,

Thanks for finishing my thought. I tried to hint at that idea, but never
actually said it. I wasn't fully awake at the time

Last night I jiggled the key, yanked on the steering wheel, kept turning the
steering wheel and nothing. This morning before going to work, after I
prayed a desperate prayer, did the same thing. And it turned!
Thanks!

Ken, if it's acting up occasionally without any undue pressure from the

while ya can do it two minutes for the mere cost of the cylinder, 'stead of

He may also want to just pull it and clean it. Particularly if hes using

I missed what kind of car it was, W123 or prior?

No, dont start working on it this weekend, work on it NOW, or do not
drive the car again until you either pull the tumbler out and use the
screw driver approach.

It sounds to me like they got their one last turn of the key so they can
pull the tumbler out, but instead they are hoping to make it to the
weekend. Chances are, it will never turn again.

Why don't you just shove a bent paper clip into the little hole and pull the
ignition cylinder out NOW? Then you've beat house at Blackjack. Turn, push,
remove, smile.
Trust me -- there are few things worse (a vasectomy NOT among them) than
removing the ignition cylinder once the pins lock up. I

My son has a 87 420 SEL and today he couldn't get the ignition key to turn
in the ignition switch. We have two keys and both will not turn in the
switch (as if it's the wrong key). He said this has been a gradual problem.
It does turn slightly in the switch - but not enough to reach the first
Next time you get the key to turn (if there is one...) you MUST leave
the key turned!!! (I have had success by turning against the key and
wiggling the steering wheel back and forth until the key turns.) The
tumbler cylinder has failed and you need to order a VIN keyed tumbler

Oh, have we ever!!? Most of us have if we've had a Mercedes long. Here's
another re-post of my Oct 07 key/lock ordeal on my 87 124. It's long, but
please read all of it or skip directly to using the sander to vibrate the
tumblers. Don't give up!
First, with the car's VIN, order a new lock
I don't think Rusty does that anymore.

The problem is the tumbler is worn out. If you would have ordered a new
one from Rusty and changed it out while you could still turn the key, it
would have been a easy 5 min job. Since you cant turn it, you are
talking major cutting and drilling to get it out. Might try getting it
to turn
If you do get it to turn again, just remove it and start the thing with
a screw driver till you get the new one in.
