There is a car repair place across the street from where I work. Seems like
there is a VW or two there every day, and we don't have too many VWs in
town.

I know 2 people with relatively recent Jettas both are still being paid for,
neither has working airconditioning. Both owners agree getting the A/C fixed is
not worth the hassle the dealer would put them through so they do without.
These are cars under warrenty...

Wonderful choice. I had one for 15 years. GREAT economy car. Rusted away.

My 2001 Beetle
Yes indeed. That is why I specified rust free.
I almost bought one back in (I think) the late 70s, when they first came
out. I test drove one all over for quite a while and the needle on the fuel
indicator didn't budge -- and no, it was not on full, it was on half tank.
What were those, about
You are a lucky () dude. Hang on to that car -- it is rare. Everyone I
know here with the New Beetle has them in the shop more days than they have
them on the road.

Hey Don, My Quantum would get 45 fully loaded doing 75. If you are
interested, I think you could get it cheep.

Our '96 Passat tdi was the most reliable car I've ever owned, or at
least it tied with the '88 Vanagon we stupidly opted to sell to my
BIL, who now gets to bask in its effervescent bullet-proofitude. Our
$800 '84 300D is currently on course to overtake both those stalwart
workhorses, if all

Funny, I'd been thinking lately that a Rabbit Convertible would be a fun
second car to have.
But only if it is a diesel. Actually, in Iowa snows I prefer a hardtop. Need
to recover my '71 MGB from Florida for top-down fun.

The last good looking MG was the A model. For top-down fun you want
either the Atom or Super Seven.

OK Don, KD5NRO

I think a diesel would be too noisy in a convertible. In particular,
the VW diesels generate an amazing amount of intake noise at higher RPM,
and that would get old in a hurry on the freeway. Also, the early 1.5L
diesels had chronic head gasket
Naw, my '71 was a blast and it even had non-rubber bumpers.

Try 60 mpg with a manual tranny. That's what i used to get consistantly
with my old VW rabbit diesel 4 door on a regular 40 mile commute on a 2
lane road in the country with no traffic ( that was running a steady 55
mph, any faster...and it wouldn't go much faster, and the mileage would
drop)
Lately, I've been fantasizing about dropping a chipped and modified
tdi into an '81 Scirocco...or a '75 or '76 VW/Porsche 914. I don't
think I'd bother owning an NA VW diesel anymore, if only for that
incessant intake drone that could drive you batty at freeway speeds.

My '87 300TD is presently tied
with my '73 VW Thing for the most persnickety primadonna and pocket
