I was thinking the lease option might be worth considering, depending on
what sorts with the situation and mileage requirements.

Otherwise a well maintained G-wagen.

Leasing is tricky at best and is rarely a win unless you can have some control
over what they establish as the residual. If you want a car payment and a new
car every 2-3 years, it could make sense.
I saw a 2012 G-something at the MB dealer last week that was being prepped for
delivery.
Leasing will put you in a car, but watch the residual they allow - you
can look at past history to get an idea of what the depreciation will be
like and they will usually allow either 12000 or 15K mi/yr - if you can
live with 12K make sure they price a 12K and not a 15K contract. But

Depends on how busy you are and how much you value a) the time required to
maintain an older eg more than 3y old car and b) driving the latest stuff.
Getting a car to the mechanic and back is a real hassle for us as we both

OK I realize that asking for opinions from y'all is like throwing a
steak to a pack of hungry dogs, but I'll do it anyway.
I am trying to get out ahead of a likely need here in the next few

What's your budget for the vehicle?
MLs don't seem to hold their value that well, at least not around here. I
haven't investigated exactly why, but I know the early models were troublesome.
Not sure about the later ones.
As for lease versus purchase, if you're going to be piling the miles

Stick with the sedan, far better mileage and reliability.

The choice between an E and a ML should be based on mission - will you need
to ford streams or deep snow? If not, the E is probably the better choice.
My 2001 ML was suspended like a truck (which is what it really was) - an e
will be more pleasant in general driving.

You could just move up to the 124 series, they are newer than your
current fleet of Benz...
Find a really nice low mile example, 2.5 turbo or E300 like mine, pay 5 or
6 grand.

This would be for Mama, and would be driving up around Greenville quite
a bit. Not sure I need a remote fixer-upper (like mine)!
