The biodegradable wiring was made in the early 1990s, became a problem in the
late 1990s/early 21st century.

At least in some environments the engine wiring harness insulation cracked and
led to engine computer malfunction all be it a relative simple system the
repair was relatively expensive since
On the Rockauto site, if you shop for an evaporator, there is a
cautionary note about "extensive" work being required.

How hard is to pull the evaporator?
My second-hand Subaru had numerous A/C problems and I think the previous
owner let it run low (means low oil charge as well) enough that it caused a
noisy compressor.
I had the high pressure hose off the A/C leak through the membrane (common
problem) and the ex

That's on a Ford Focus, not a 124 chassis.
BTDT, too. Only that one I paid for. Ouch.

My AC evaporator was supposedly leaking, according to the dealer, but I popped
a can of the Wallyworld R134a with stop leak in it and it's been fine ever
since.
It seemed to lose efficiency every 4-6 months, so I had them take a look. When
they told me it was an evaporator leak ($1600) I passed
Ours has 149,000 miles. We've had broken strut springs, a transmission
problem, failed AC evaporator, collapsed motor mounts, and now this.

Both of mine are on the top side of 100,000 miles.
My 2004 wagon has a little over 150k and the son's 2005 sedan has almost 170k.
Both run very well and have been very good maintenance-wise. The most expensive
item to-date has been tires.
After that, the son's sedan needed a new shifter ($300)
Same issue applies to 124 wagons; been there fixed that.

Good idea. Like test lead wire.
Heat shrink or electrical tape sounds like a good fix.
I know insulation/electrical problems exist on other makes, but one would
think Ford would learn how to make an automobile without such problems.
Ford vehicles have been catching fire decades and even burning people's
houses down.

I drive a 2004 ZTW (wagon) and my youngest son drives a 2005 ZT5 sedan.
I follow a couple of Focus forums an have never heard of this being an issue.
My wagon is a Florida car that commuted annually to Rhode Island for the
summers, so it's never really experienced anything in the way of seasons
I believe I've consulted the wisdom of this group at least once before
about an electrical problem with our 2003 Ford Focus wagon.
The problem began with the rear wiper working erratically, then not at
all, then if and only if the rear defroster was on. Fuses began
blowing. Last week wife called
