Day late, dollar short. While discussing the deal with SWMBA the car slipped
through my fingers.. into the hand of the fellow who had yet to put money on
the table. He picked it up for his 18 year old daughter for $8500. Having a
truck take it to Vancouver BC for her birthday.

Went out today to look at the SL I missed getting a look at in January due to
the Seattle style blizzard. Seller had to be out of town on work to Hawai'i
instead of hanging out in the rain for three months.

Maybe next week. I have three other SL I am checking out this weekend in that
price range. I am finding that price range is full of compromised examples. I
have seen others that are closer to 10k that are also needs help.

I will sell Clay the engine from my POS Euro 500SEL for $500. That would
make a nice swap into a 380.

I really want a 280 engine. No need for V8 guzzling and lack of power because
it got detuned anyway. Dual banks of things to go wrong with V8, and twice the
expense.

Given the choice, I would opt for the 380, as it is a nice balance of economy
and power.
IMHO, the later V-8 models are detuned to the point of being worthless, not to
mention they are far from efficient (if that term could be used to describe a
V-8!)

Clearly you have not driven a 560 which has plenty of get-up-and-go
I took the advice below to heart when I bought my '83 380SL. Not looking for
controversy nor plan to defend Stu's reputation but I wouldn't underestimate
the single row chain issue.

Very true that.
I was looking at the swapping out of trans and diff to get the needed power.
The later set makes up for how detuned the 560 was, but does not bolt on well
to the older engine. Guess I take the 380 and de californicate it. Should be
some bhp gain in losing the cat and other

I am jonesing for the early 450sl, since it is simple and sort of easy to work
with. All the smog and ABS or computer mess is not for me. Seeing all the

I am not interested in power. I want a calm and agreeable ride. Remember, I

My thinking exactly. If I wanted a race car, I would buy a Porsche.
That's one of the reasons why the 380SEL appeals to me. A beautiful chassis
with an engine that is relatively simple to service and economical to drive.

FWIW, here's a list of the upgrades to the 560SL from the previous R1076's.
According to MB, the following are among the items that were changed
for the 560SL (only version 107.048):
Different spring rate
Harder shocks with shorter travel
Larger torsion bar (up 1mm to 26mm)
Front axle carrier
In the case described below, I'm reasonably certain that the new chain on worn
out sprockets was no better than, and probably worse than, leaving the old chain
that was worn to match the sprockets installed. Now I'm left wondering what the

Been scouring the local R107 barrel. Finally found a true keeper. Of course
it is at the stealer, is nigh perfect all around, and under $11k. Not mine yet.
Has 120k miles, great paint, with three rock chips, glass has one rock chip.
Second owner, with folder of records and all paperwork.
Green coolant means a new radiator, and possibly a water pump. Oil on the
hoo dpad might be from the breather having broken or come loose in the past
- which also indicates that despite the low miles, the rings are frozen and
leaking. Remember that unless they've been recently replaced, ALL the
Personally I would rather see a car in it's natural state rather than

Oil leaks are not natural and can be used as a bargaining tool, coolant
colour depends on the manufacturer, Lemfoerders coolant for MB's is green.
Looks like you're in a poker game with the sales person, ya gotta
This would be superb investment. As the thought is, you purchase either a
good body or good engine. Been looking at examples that can say neither. This
seems to be in the top 95% in both. Rubber body seals are soft and good. No
visible evidence of any water intrusion. Might even be
