Yes, but those really aren't mechanics, they are parts changers, and it
is socially acceptable to refer to them as morons and crooks. ( I get a
good number of my customers after they've had experiences with morons
and crooks..and there's a bunch of them around here, including most of
the dealer

gasket I'm told. Was told it'd be more expensive to go in and repair

As was said before YES you do need to check the compression BEFORE you
install the engine. You DONT have to hook up a transmission to test it,
you just need to bolt the starter up. Shouldnt take more than 20 or 30
minutes with the engine sitting on the ground there. Just hook the
starter up,
