How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive had a description and great drawing of the
technique. In fact there are loads of great drawings in that book which is a
great read even if you don't have an aircooled VW.
No you can't borrow my copy.

I wound up using the smallest easy-out I had, on an 8 long .25
socket extender with a quick-coupler. The fat side of the extender
just fit into the drill, and with the ramps there was plenty of
working space. Bolt end came out inside 5 minutes including rigging
the coupler; new bolts went in

I'm putting a star on this email, very good trick!
I'll be putting in a bazillion of those 6mm suckers once I get my
upper pan finished, I'll have to see which is more accurate, the thumb
or the torque wrench. :)

Good! If you only end up with one 6mm bolt broken off, I would
suggest that it won't have a big impact if you leave it that way.
As for torque. you really don't need a torque wrench for 6mm bolts.
If you put your thumb around the rachet and tighten the bolt as tight
as you can with your
with no toque wrench required (but more time and a little oil

Great news. I remember some of those bolts way up in holes ---
None of mine broke. I did use an inch-ounce torque wrench -- but don't
remember the setting.

So... I finally finished the SDL's oil pan, after the poor thing
sitting all winter today was a nice shiny day - high of 73 - so I was
able to put the new pan on.
As I was taking my last pass around the bolts to make sure everything
was tight, I broke the head off one of the bolts into the block,
