As I recall, there wasn’t anything “official”, but if a car came in under
warranty or close to it with the symptoms, it got replaced.
My former 350SDL got either a crate engine or short block, I couldn’t quite
tell exactly which from the VMI, around 90k.

So where's the risk? It's lasted 132 k miles and if it runs properly now,

I bought a factory engine for the '76 300D once - they were on sale,
supposedly one of the last two in the Chicago warehouse. It had a blank spot
where the serial number was supposed to be. I heard somewhere that a dealer
was supposed to stamp the original engines number there. Can't verify that

buy lots of new tools that I'll never use again.

the old injectors work when it would be much easier to just use the
