very well get rid of my bugs, since it felt very much like a
race condition.
Then I'll have a look at the soundtouch interface, and if I
can get pitch control, it will be bliss for a while

Which version of Mixxx 1.8.x were you using? There were serious audio
quality issues with 1.8.0, and sometime after that we reverted the patch
that caused that. Have you tried the 1.9 beta? (or built from the 1.9 branch
or trunk?)
If you're hacking on Mixxx I would suggest using 1.8
