I wholeheartedly agree with you that all this RTI required testing is worse
than what came about under NCLB and AYP. We have to "probe" tier 2 kids every
2 weeks in addition to all the formative and summative assessments.

If your data collection is anything like ours (aimsweb) it is useless as far
as informing instruction. We waste hours in data team meetings discussing
scores that measure how fast a child can read, rather than if he can
comprehend. I'd consider myself lucky to be as distanced as possible.
The insanity is so bad, I can only think, "Who is John Galt? "

Try " Because of Mr. Terupt." A story of a 5th grade class and their teacher.
The kids are characters your students will recognize - the mean girl, the
guiet kid, the jokester, etc. They all have a backstory that brings some
interesting discussions.

MANY excellent teachers are feeling overwhelmed and exhausted with the
demands of planning, differentiating, assessing,and documenting growth (or lack
of) for children who's needs go beyond the resources of a regular ed classroom.

I agree with you that we must bridge the gap for these kids who come to us
already a year or so behind. But my total frustration with what is going on
today is that the attitude seems to be that we can TEST them into being
smarter. No money, programs, resources are being applied
Just have to comment that I sooo agree with Bonita about getting more
informed reporting on education from the press. Our local Jr. high school has
failed to make AYP (because of a SPED sub group) and the headlines in the
paper
made us sound so terrible I wanted to scream.

My district is also beginning an RTI implementation in Sept. and today we
were given our first peek at what that will mean. We've been told that math
will have a pacing chart and, ready or not, all kids in the district will take
a particular unit test on the day that is prescrib
I just finished reading Small Steps by Louis Sachar and besides being a
fabulous story, it would be perfect for your study.
