The Comprehension Toolkit for grades 3-6 has a great lesson on monitoring
using How Many Days to America by Eve Bunting. It's great! I just used it
with my sixth graders.

That's exactly what I did after I introduced the whole idea of
metacognition. Now the kids are trying it on their own and recording their
thinking using sticky notes. After a while I will let them decide if they
need to continue with using sticky notes for fiction but I require them to
