An osprey was spotted off of crosstown on the nest pole in Edina on
Saturday.
The Twin Cities Osprey Project, which is part of 3 Rivers Park, would
appreciate reports of any sightings of osprey. Please report any
sighting of an osprey (including when and where it was seen and what
it appeared
New (to me) arrivals since yesterday were: Eastern Phoebe, calling
insistently; Fox Sparrows, singing snatches of sweet song; and 5 Woodcock
foraging between the bluff trail and the larger lake.
The woodcocks were startled into flying across the path, onto the bluff
hillside, where they ambled in
Spring has sprung. Things were awful quite yesterday afternoon - almost no
geese. There were some birds around, better numbers and variety this
afternoon. Between yesterday and today, more streams have started to flow
and almost all the snow and ice that was lingering in the ditches is gone.

The large amount of water in the fields south of town has yielded a
plethora of water fowl.
The wetland off Northfield Blvd. south of Hastings (cross street 210th) had
Pintails, Gadwall, Shovelers, Widgeon, Sandhill Cranes, Swans, Coots, etc.
I'm sure with a scope you'd find more.

Hi, I saw a duck this am in the river near the cedar ave bridge and can't ID
it. The male was about the size of a mallard with a black head and tail and
white in the middle. It was either hanging out with Coots or the female is all
black. Thx!

What a great morning! Lots of new species, and they were very active and vocal
today.
Passerine highlights:
Fox Sparrow

Eastern Bluebird
Rusty Blackbird
Northern Flicker
Common Grackle
Red-winged Blackbirds and American Robins were everywhere! As were Dark-eyed
Junco
I had some first of the year birds on a hike along Trout Brook in the
Miesville Ravine Co. Park this afternoon. 21 species including the
following were seen:

Wood Duck 32
Mallard 2
Hooded Merganser 9
Ruffed Grouse 1
Great Blue Heron 5
Bald Eagle 4
American Woodcock 1
Belted
I have seen a few interesting things around the county during the last
three days.
First, along Aitkin County Road 18:
--A NORTHERN HAWK OWL about a half mile west of the intersection
of C.R. 18 and C.R. 5
--3 GREAT GRAY OWLS. One at 6/10 mile east of highway 169, one at
8/10 mile e
Had a decent mix of winter and spring birds yesterday and this AM
(despite the fog). Still had a Rough-leg, a N. Shrike, Purple Finch, C.
Redpolls, a RBNuthatch and Snow Buntings. Not many waterfowl yet, Hoodies,
Woodies, two Ring-Necked Ducks and a single Ruddy Duck. Had a Sharp-Shinned
Hawk,
This afternoon around 1 o'clock Diedrick Benz reported to me that he found
two Franklin's Gulls out on the river. I refound them shortly after. They
were just up river from the interstate bridge where the barge area begins.

River just down river from the verchota boat landing.

4 Trumpeter Swans arrived on Silver Lake in Virginia today. There are also 2
pair of Northern Shovelers.
There is also one duck I couldn't ID - solid medium brown, head is greenish
black, green bill. A lot bigger than the Mallards. He's staying near a
Mallard female. Maybe a Mallard x Blac
There was an influx of birds other than waterfowl overnight including Tree
Swallow, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Hermit Thrush, and Fox Sparrow.at Rapids Lake

Beautiful male northern harrier hunting along a gravel road, and kestrels

It was a great day for migration in Duluth yesterday (29 March), with
temperatures hitting 47 degrees and light south winds. A group of us counted
raptor migration from the West Skyline Hawk Count, including Dave Carman, Frank
Nicoletti, and Jane Hosking, resulting in 505 raptors for the day, in
25 matches
