The Ruff was still in the same location at 5

The low water conditions at Salt Lake have produced a wide margin of =

n he first found it yesterday. The identification =
is pretty straight forward; the bird is in good bright breeding plumage. =
Sorting through about a bzillion (not an entirely scientific term) other =
shorebirds in that pothole makes it a bit more challenging though.

on each flight. At least half a dozen bats were caught in a matter of 15
minutes or less.

right off the side of the road - very nice viewing. I'm guessing
75-100 shorebirds. I didn't glass them all, but what I saw included yellow
legs, pecs, solitary, semi-sand, killdeer, least and phalaropes.

we found a kettle of soaring Swainson's Hawks that were counted at over 200
with a few Turkey Vultures and one lone Golden Eagle mixed in.
Unfortunately for the MN listers this happened just over the border into SD,
but it was a great birding experience none th
South Dakota as well
as various riparian habitats along the Missouri River. Our time is split
between classroom sessions and field trips. On Sunday, we bird our way back
east.

Haydenville WMA (4 miles west of Madison) is also in drawdown and may have
shorebirds as well? The DNR is pumping water from Cory so it should be good
shorebird habitat for a considerable length of time, depending on weather, etc.

numbers of individuals and a wide variety of species.
One example: Right now we are finding juvenile LeConte's Sparrows around Salt
Lake MN.

view. Several Black-bellied Plovers were found and two flocks of migrating
Golden Plovers were also seen over the weekend.

Following our sparrow workshop this weekend in Milbank SD, Bob Janssen and I
went to Mound Springs SNA. We had a Prairie Falcon fly over and then land on a
power pole.
Later in the day while surveying for the DNR on the same SNA, I found a very
late season Grasshopper Sparrow.

. The best bird of the weekend, while not a
big deal to MN birders was the Pileated Woodpecker up on the Prairie Choteau in
the woods around Labolt Dam in South Dakota. This is the extreme western range
of this bird and totally NOT expected up on the prairie.
