have been quite a few black backed woodpeckers coming through, so I knew it was

If you go looking for the rock wren, which I did not see, check things out
around the boat landing in the campground area. Located and photographed a
Blue Gray Gnatcatcher there recently. Pretty cool bird for Cook County. Also
saw five american golden plovers in the campground as well.

9/8/08: Stopped by the soccer field by the airport at Minnesota Point this
AM. Saw two american pipits on the field. Saw a group of five american
golden plovers come in quite low and circle the entire soccer field three
times
without landing, so close to landing, but then.. no. I a

that the bird that you encountered in your apple tree was an immature
redbellied
woodpecker. Again, only you would know for sure, but you might want to go

9/6/08: Found a Buff Breasted Sandpiper near the lift bridge on the lake
side of Minnesota Point. The bird was beyond confiding. Spent approx. 2

birding fallout caused by the weather. Arrived at the point at 5:00AM
expecting excellent birding based on the thick foggy conditions, was not
disappointed. As noted there were hundreds of warblers. I parked about

Located a probable second townsends solitaire in Duluth/Hermantown today.
On the corner of Haines road and Hermantown road there is a house across the
street from the BP gas station with a large crabapple tree in the front yard.

wildlife refuge in Hermantown Minnesota today. Found two females and heard
at least one other bird that was in too deep in the woods to go looking for.

Over the past three days bohemian waxwings have been massing on Minnesota
Point. Today there were at least 200 of them near the soccer field devouring
apples, eating snow, bathing in the snow, eating salt off the roads, they are

I had things to do this Saturday morning that were going to prevent me from
doing any birding, so I had to make due with occasionally glancing out the
backyard window. I nearly went spastic when I looked out and saw 10 EVENING
GROSBEAKS! They had dropped out of the sky and quickly gorged t
10/24 and 10/25/07. Yesterday morning found several downy and hairy
woodpeckers, 2 yellow bellied sapsuckers, and one male threetoed woodpecker at
lighthouse point in Two Harbors. Also found one pilleated woodpecker, and one
female blackbacked woodpecker at Stony Point. This AM I found a m
9/20/07, Started birding at lighthouse point in Two Harbors, turned up well
over 100 robins having quite a time of it gorging themselves on Mountain Ash,
which seems profuse on the trail that runs along the point- Bring on the
bohemian waxwings:), two sharp shinned hawks flew low and over the
10/3/07, Spent this AM on Minnesota Point in Duluth. Turned up 10 Bald
Eagles, 5 Accipiters, 3 kestrels,
a few Lapland Longspurs, a few pipits, 100+ darkeyed juncos, first American

8/25/07, 4-5:30PM, Got off work today and went down to Park Point. While
driving past the soccer/ball field I noticed a small group of the wind birds
fly out from the field over the lake then come back to the field and land. I
approached the birds and counted 10 buff breasted sandpipers.
8/23/07, During the morning hours 8-10AM, I observed three ruddy turnstones
on the breakwater at Minnesota Point. Also observed at this location were
20 spotted sandpipers, 10 semipalmated sandpipers, and five least sandpipers,

Morgan Park, Duluth, at least 100 to 200 nighthawks moved through the area. I
have witnessed many such movements while taking in soccer games at this time

I have looked at a number of pictures of snowy plovers now and I'm pretty
sure that what I saw was two snowy plovers at Minnesota Point this morning,
Duluth, MN. 8-10am. They associated with sanderlings which are still

This morning on Minnesota Point, I found two plovers that I was not able to
id. I am familiar with semipalmated plovers and how they present in this
setting- I've seen many. These two were different. They moved across the

with much greater rapidity. They have a broken breastband, a
